No Longer Empty presents a special concert featuring Canadian cellist Julia Kent.

The concert is in conjunction with the current public art exhibition “Something Out of Nothing” which opened October 3rd, 2009. The former factory floor of the one time belt factory and home to the original Invisible Dog toy, has been brought back to life with site specific installations which reflect both the history of the space and the oxymoronic construct of the toy: a legend, a fantasy born out of almost nothing, a void object waiting for creative minds to make it come to life.

One of the participating artists took the opportunity to engage with the architecture of the space. Italian artist, Giuseppe Stampone transformed the former freight elevator into a major installation which evokes Charon’s boat from the Homeric legend- the boat carried the souls of the dead across the river Styx that divided the world of the living from those of the dead. Stampone’s version carries the visitor through Dante’s Divine Comedy: from the factory’s first floor, the elevator follows Dante’s writing from hell through purgatory up to paradise on the third floor with Dante’s verses transcribed on the whole expanse of the shaft’s walls, replete with illuminated letters. The soulful sounds of Julia Kent’s cello accompany the visitor throughout this epic journey.

Biography on Julia Kent

After years of playing cello with a myriad of artists and ensembles, from Antony and the Johnsons to Rasputina, Julia Kent holed up in her Lower East Side apartment to make a solo record inspired by touring and the disjunctions of travel. Incorporating multi tracked cello, omnichord, and field recordings from airports around the world, her
"lovely, melancholy," compositions, full of "aching romanticism ... rich melodicism, and detailed arrangements," make up Delay, her solo debut, released by Shayo Records in Europe and Important Records in North America.

She has performed solo throughout Europe and the UK, as well as in New York, using live looping and effects to create layers of melody and rhythm on the cello. Of her appearance at the Donau Festival in Austria, the Wire said: “Cellist Julia Kent's set, in which she sampled and played over herself, was a thing of miniature beauty.” Lucid Culture described a recent New York appearance as: "...riveting and frequently cinematic ...moving from trippy, echoey and atmospheric to stark and haunting..."
